  1. Analysis of molecular variance for different grouping models based on previous hypotheses regarding the genetic structure based on microsatellite markers on the current distribution of mangrove forest (a priori hypotheses) and on the genealogical relationships of the haplotypes (a posteriori models). The acronyms refer to the geographic regions where samples were obtained and are identical to those used in Additional file 1. The samples labeled “North Brazil” were obtained from the states of Pará, Maranhão, Piauí and Ceará, and the samples labeled “South Brazil” were the remaining samples from the Brazilian coastline regions. AMMC designates samples from the Amazon Macrotidal Mangrove Coast from Pará and Maranhão States.
