A comparison between the global distribution of (A) dusky dolphin and (B) anchovy ( Engraulis sp.) genetic variation. The statistical parsimony networks of the dusky dolphin and anchovy cytochrome b haplotypes are overlaid on a map to illustrate the geographic pattern of haplotype evolution. Numbers point out notable similarities: (1) marked divergence between South American haplotypes from those in the Atlantic and Indian Oceans, and (2) north-south equatorial transgressions in the Pacific Ocean with (3) a putative ancestor in the North Pacific.
