  1. The value of mutated genes is drawn from a normal distribution about the mother's gene value. The standard deviation of this normal distribution is scaled (0.2(x)) relative to what is considered a reasonable range for the parameter. The maximum of durations is imposed due to how the model was programmed, but is high enough not to affect the results. t MIN is the minimal time interval (see Section 1.1. in Additional file 1 ).
