Optimal memory pool size with cost. Optimal memory pool size nmp as a function of the relative cost ρ. For each value of ρ, competition experiments between individuals differing only in their memory pool size, nmp, were performed and the relative fitness w was determined based on Eq.2. For each combination of (nmp,1, nmp,2) with nmp,. {0, 7, 10, 20, 28, 30, 40, 50}, we performed 15 independent simulation runs. The figure is based on the following bootstrap routine: For each combination (nmp,1, nmp,2) considered, one of the 15 simulation runs was chosen at random and the optimal memory pool size was determined based on this constructed fitness matrix. We performed 10000 replicates per value of ρ. The median (dot), as well as the 10% and 90% percentiles are shown. Results are shown for replacement sizes of nrep = 7 (red) and nrep = 20 (blue) given the standard pathogen environment.
