The cox2 gene. The example of the cox2 gene illustrates important issues of streptophyte mitochondrial group II intron diversity. Altogether twelve different group II insertion sites are presently identified in different plant lineages and streptophyte algae with colors distinguishing introns in bryophytes (blue), those shared with or present only in algae (green) and those shared with or present only in vascular plants (yellow). The latter include cox2i373g2 and cox2i691g labeled with NLE for “Non-Liverwort Embryophytes” given their presence in all land plant lineages except the liverworts. Asterisks indicate cases of introns occupying the same position in algae and land plants that were considered orthologues despite lack of significant sequence similarity
