A blue region name indicates that the colonies are monogyne, while a red region name indicates that colonies are polygyne. Genotype is indicated by color: green = Sm/Sm, brown = Sm/Sp, and Yellow = Sp/Sp. Genotype (green, brown, yellow) is shown for each individual worker, while phenotype (red, blue) relates to the colony as a whole. Colonies with “undetermined” social structure were excluded from this analysis (N = 4; see Additional file 1: Fig. S3)
