Avian phylogeny and dietary categories. Avian phylogeny is constructed based on published studies [17, 69, 71] and the Tree of Life Web Project (http://tolweb.org/tree/). For convenience, only the genus names of species are shown. Dietary information is derived from a previous study [61]. Dietary categories are shown in different colors, and blanks indicate that dietary information is unavailable. The pet charts show the proportions of species numbers with different dietary categories for our focal avian groups. PlantSeed (plant and seeds), FruiNect (fruits and nectar), Invertebrate (invertebrates), VertFishScav (vertebrates and fish and carrion), and Omnivore (score of ≤ 50 in all four categories). The letters (A–N) show the branches under positive selection analyses based on the whole avian dataset in this study
