Extinction time of either genotype of either host or parasite population for different initial population sizes of the parasite NP for all models. We show the mean extinction time of any genotype over 1000 independent simulations (fat dots) and the distribution of those extinction times (shaded histogram area around the mean). The simulations start with equal abundance of both genotypes H1(0)=H2(0)=NH/2 and P1(0)=P2(0)=NP/2. Lines denote approximate results based on the average noise (see Additional file 1). The discrete time processes are simulated for values of NP for which analytical results are valid. The Evo + process is not simulated for high parasite population sizes since the computation becomes extremely time-consuming and the trend is already clear. Parameters as in Fig. 1 except NH=250,K=500, birthrate bh{0.24,0.32,...,1.6} in the EcoEvo + and for the EcoEvo model bh{0.12,0.16,...,0.8} and μ=0 to achieve the population sizes NP displayed
