The phylogenetic analysis was based on five conserved loci: 16S rRNA, 23S rRNA, pyrG, rpoB and pgm. Solid circles indicate that Pxr was detected in the respective species and the numbers inside indicate the numbers of pxr alleles found. Empty circles denote that Pxr was not detected. ‘Anc’ indicates the phylogenetic position of the ancestral pxr allele examined in this study. Shaded boxes highlight extant species from which respective pxr alleles were transferred into M. xanthus (see text for details).
