Experimental design. Mothers were first assigned to a pathogen treatment (pathogen-challenged or control) and then allocated to one of two groups, that were either exposed to a night of sleep-deprivation or undisrupted sleep. Two daughters and two sons from of each of these mothers were then exposed to the pathogen treatment (one of each to the challenge and one of each to the control), prior to an assay of their reproductive performance
