Schematic of MACIT evolution within the major lineages of the metazoan tree of life. The schematic evolutionary tree of metazoans demonstrates the major lineages of metazoans and the presence or absence of MACIT-encoding sequences identified in this study. The Gnathostomata (jawed vertebrates) are the only lineage in which more than one MACIT gene/genome was identified. Details of representative species in which MACITs were identified are given in Table 1
