Light microscopy analysis of the zone where two yellowish transgenic sepals are fused together. In panel (a) a low magnification of the fused region is shown and no visible anatomic boundary can be detected where the two sepals join together (black rectangle). In panel (b) a higher magnification of the area marked by the black rectangle in (a) confirms the absence of anatomical boundaries. However, the mesophyll cells in the fusion zone are smaller compared to those located at the center of the sepal. (scale bar = 100 μm)
