Reconstruction of ancestral mitochondrial gene sets using MitoCOGs. (a) A species tree with the eukaryotic root between the unikonts and bikonts was employed as the framework for the reconstruction. The numbers in parentheses after the taxon name is the number of MitoCOGs genes encoded in the mitochondrial genome. Numbers in each internal node indicate the inferred size of ancestral gene content.
