Alternative hypotheses of turtle relationships tested. The three (out of eight) main hypotheses on the position of turtles within Amniota combined to the three alternatives (a, b, c) of cryptodire relationships. Nodes indicate Testudines. The preferred hypothesis of our study is highlighted. Illustrations show the most basal cryptodire taxa in each hypothesis. The numbers above the main branch are the counts of CONSENSUS/ACCTRAN/DELTRAN shifts for the analysis with unordered characters, numbers below the main branch are the same counts for the analysis with ordered characters.
