Rates of response were significantly different from zero with P < 0.001 except those marked by † (P < 0.005), ‡ (P < 0.01), and NS (P > 0.05). Nested analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) F-values are given for the interaction effect of cumulative selection differential by line nested within selection direction (df = 7,72); **P < 0.0001, *P < 0.01. Superscripts refer to slopes, for each eyespot within an experiment that were judged not significantly different from each other according to Tukey's pairwise multiple comparisons (α = 0.05).
