WebLogos were created from alignments that only included the sequences belonging to each ependymin group: (A) FishBrain – 33 sequences. (B) FishTj – 12 sequences. (C) MERPs – 20 sequences. (D) Basal – 8 sequences. For this analysis the Shark_Squa sequence was included in neither the FishBrain nor FishTj group. Underlined are the characteristic amino acid stretches for each group as described in the main text. Arrow heads and asterisks indicate diagnostic residues as in Figure 1. Functional divergence-related sites are labeled with a black circle above the letter. The rate-shifted site 161 used as example in the text is additionally labeled with an arrow. Regions of the alignments where gaps were introduced in most of the sequences are presented in the WebLogos as empty sites.
