(B-F) Historical samples are pooled to time periods of two decades each. Size of pies corresponds to the number of individuals per locality. Mitochondrial lineages of the HEC are defined according to Hundsdoerfer et al.[31] and Figure 1; colours correspond to the lineages (see Figure 1). Dashed black lines mark the border of the 'italica' core region deduced from the recent distribution in 2004–2010 for use in Figure 4.
