Nodes are coded and correspond to table 2; the nodes of interest, separating the crested newt morphotypes, are coded I-III (the remaining nodes are coded a-e). The NRBV additions required to explain the NRBV variation observed in Triturus today are noted along the phylogeny (interpreting NRBV = 13 as the ancestral character state, see Additional File 1). The exact timing of inferred NRBV shifts is not known, only that they are positioned on a particular branch.
