Physiological responses to changes in X. A. Growth rate (μ) vs. X. The points (•) were obtained solving equations (1) to (3) for different values of X (the values of the other parameters as in Figure 2). They were fitted to a rectangular hyperbola: μ = μ max X/(Kμ + X) using the transformation: X/μ = X max + Kμ max . The resulting hyperbola (μ max = 2.108 and Kμ = 3.586) is the curve (—) joining the points. B. vs. μ. (the arithmetic mean of the initial and final cell volume in a cell cycle) and μ are obtained for different values of X as described in (A). Their values (•) are represented together with the exponential fit: , with 0 = 0.4734 and c = 0.5519.
